Personal background

Alexandre Calapez studied law and built his professional career at the intersection of strategy, taxation, organisational structure and business decision-making. Over the years, he has worked with organisations through periods of growth and transformation, advising on structure, leadership and decision-making.

Alongside his professional work, he devotes time to reflecting on strategy, social issues, economics and leadership, publishing his writing on his personal website. This practice gave rise to a principle that runs through all his work: understand the context before forming an opinion.

The creation of the Free World Knowledge Foundation

Alongside his professional career, Alexandre Calapez founded the Free World Knowledge Foundation, an informal Portuguese philanthropic association. Its name reflects the conviction that access to knowledge is a condition for freer societies, and that knowledge gains value when it leads to practical intervention — an idea at the heart of the Foundation’s work.

An evolving mission

The Free World Knowledge Foundation carries out social action directly. It contributes time, skills and organisational capacity, working with communities and local organisations.

Its work addresses challenges of global significance, including poverty, social exclusion and limited access to education and knowledge, through action on the ground and the transfer of skills to the communities where it works. Although its areas of intervention may evolve over time, they remain faithful to its founding idea: a freer world through shared knowledge.

Alexandre Calapez is personally involved in the Foundation’s work, drawing on his experience in management and consulting: examining each situation in context, setting clear priorities and favouring solutions that can endure beyond an individual intervention.

Throughout his career, one thing has remained constant: his commitment to the most difficult problems. Many of the issues the Foundation works on have no quick solutions, and some may never be fully resolved. Alexandre Calapez believes this is precisely why they deserve sustained attention, with method and persistence.
